  Chapter 1

  Kadmiel

I lean towards the human woman sitting on the bar stool beside me and kiss the angle of her jaw. Her eyes roll back as the smell of her arousal whips my nostrils, calling to the primal part of my being. My dick twitches in my pants. I’ll have her in the bathroom. She wants to be fucked rough there. Her mind is screaming that desire.

Humans are so easy. So predictable. I rub my thumb against her lower lip and she sighs. Her pupils dilate, and her heartbeat speeds. Just one encouraging glance from me and she wants to spread her legs for me. So easy.

My boys and I visit this pub two, three times a month. We are angels, but we love the company of human women.

My boys erupt into laughter and bang their fists on the table. Their shot glasses clink and their chants waft through the air. My eyes sweep over their faces then travel to the women clinging to them, two blondes, a brunette, and a redhead. True diversity.

We will drink tonight. A lot of vodka and beer. We’ve just killed three demons and we need to shake off the adrenaline.

We will fuck human women for the same reason. I’m planning to have at least three of them, but I haven’t decided yet whether I’ll have them one after another or all in one go. Three wet pussies. Hell yeah.

“Amanda,” the woman sitting beside me whispers into my ear.

I really don’t care whether her name is Amanda, Anna, or something else. I want to have fun tonight, that’s all.

The front door of the pub swings open and a slim figure walks in. I recognise her smell at once-seaweed, wind, and salty water. She’s a mermaid, a very young one in fact. She stands in the middle of the pub under the crystal chandelier and looks around. Her face lights up at the sight of stained glass windows and a pulpit. The pub was once a church. If I focus enough, I can sense the past preserved in the walls, sadness during funerals, joy during weddings, respect, fear, and the misery of the poorest.

As the mermaid’s big emerald eyes meet mine, her jaw drops and she steps back. Good. She knows who the authority is. I can sense her fear and respect for me.

I give her an encouraging nod and she steps forward then freezes.

Her white skin has a delicate sea green shimmer that only angels can see. Humans will see only an ordinary girl not a mermaid. Not to mention that they are unaware of the whole existence of supernatural creatures. They shouldn’t know that there are demons or vampires threatening their fragile lives on a daily basis. Angels fight evil and protect all the good and neutral creatures of the world. Humans live in a mirage they call a modern world where angels and demons are the heroes and villains of fairy tales.

The mermaid spins and slides her eyes over the interior. The woman sitting beside me clings to my arm and her breath puffs into my neck, which pisses me off for some mysterious reason. An urge pulsates in my head. I need to get rid of Amanda.

“You’re tired,” I say into her ear. “Go to your house.”

She rises from her seat and saunters towards the exit.

Pride surges through me. I’m so fucking good at compulsion. I thrust my chin forward then nod at my boys and they get rid of the women accompanying them. They must be thinking we’re going to visit our favourite whorehouse tonight.

Micah, my second in command, leans towards me as a wide grin crosses his ebony face, exposing his perfect white teeth. “Boring?”

  “Boring,” I say.

Micah juts his chin towards the mermaid still standing in the middle of the pub. “About one hundred years old. They are really funny when they emerge from the sea for the first time ever.”

The mermaid seems to be a bit lost. She twines her fingers with her platinum-blonde hair cascading down to her waist like a waterfall and arches her thick dark eyebrows. Her full lips part. Fucking hell. She has beautiful lips, shiny like ripened cherries.

Micah nudges my chest with his elbow. “You okay?”

“Focus on getting drunk,” I mutter to him and keep staring at the mermaid.

I shouldn’t be staring at her. I shouldn’t even have noticed her in the first place. She’s a mermaid. I’m an angel.

We’re two different species living in two different worlds like birds and wolves. Birds avoid wolves and wolves don’t pay attention to birds.

Angels don’t fuck mermaids. We’re stripped of desire for them.

We’re two different species, yet I’m drinking in every detail of the mermaid’s appearance-her navy biker jacket and vest showing off her large tits, her jeans showing off her round ass. Her tiny hands trembling against her stomach. We’re two different species not designed to fuck. Yet, I can’t take my eyes off her. I can see her naked in my mind.

My glance catches hers and I point my finger to the space beside me, giving her a clear order to stand at my table. She rushes to me and drops a curtsy in front of me. Her scent wraps around me like a shawl. I take a deep breath, inhaling her tantalising musk.

“This is my first time,” she says and smiles brightly at me, her hands clenched against her stomach.

My boys stare at me as disbelief and subtle repulsion paint their faces.

We don’t interact with mermaids. They are a bit repulsive to our kind. But, fucking hell, this one is really pretty.

This one is playing tricks on my mind, awakening something dark and possessive inside of me.

“Be careful around humans,” I say, leaning towards her.

“I will, sir,” she murmurs. “I promise.”

I stifle my urge to kiss her neck. My dick grows hard, forming a bulge in my jeans. My mind pulsates. Fucking hell. What is happening?

  “Have
a drink with us,” I say.

“I’m not allowed to socialise with you, sir,” she says. “The rules—“

  “I’m giving you my permission.”

She gazes at me, her eyes wide, fear and surprise painted on her face.

My boys shoot me glances of pity, but don’t say anything.

“I don’t drink alcohol,” she says timidly.

“So have a glass of water with salt,” I say.

She nods and I wave my hand to the waitress who rushes to take my orders.

“So,” I start. “Your first time on dry land? What’s your name?”

“Rive,” she says. “I was born only seventy years ago.”

She’s so young in mermaid terms, eighteen years old in human terms. A kid. My eyes sweep over her tits. No, definitely an adult.

“Rive?” I ask. “That’s an interesting name.”

“You pronounce it rĭv,” she says.

I grit my teeth. I know every language on Earth. A mermaid won’t teach me how to pronounce her name.

Rive shudders at my expression and my anger dissipates. I don’t want to scare her for some mysterious reason.

I’ve always enjoyed the fearful respect her kind has for us. They worship us like we’re gods. We’re not gods. We’re just a bunch of warriors who fight all the evil of the world. But I just want to be a regular guy with Rive.

I take her hand and plant a kiss on her knuckles. “Kadmiel. My name is Kadmiel.”

Rive tears her hand away from mine and her lips form an ‘o’. Heat rushes through my veins and I stifle my urge to drag her to the bathroom and drive my dick into her sinfully beautiful mouth.

  Rive

I can sense the aura of fierceness and ruthlessness radiating from the five angels gathered around the table. My mother told me to obey them so I’m trying to obey them even though being around these powerful creatures fills me with primal fear. They are deadly beautiful. Dangerous like a hurricane and tall like oak trees. They have authority over all the creatures on Earth. Over my kind in particular.

Kadmiel is the most dangerous of them, their leader. It’s obvious from the glances his men are shooting towards him.

His grey eyes blaze like two bright storm clouds against the white glow of his skin. I can see that glow of his unlike humans who will see only a man in him. He threads his fingers through his short brown hair then grips my arm and pulls me to him. I sigh as he grasps my waist and sets me on his lap. His companions erupt into laughter.

“Her first time on dry land,” Kadmiel says and grins, flashing his perfect white teeth. “We’ll entertain this little mermaid, right?”

Another angel salutes him. His ebony face lights up, and his black eyes flicker with curiosity. I sense something subtle, warm from him.

All the angels around me introduce themselves to me with their cold voices. Their neutral voices, like it’s below them to even talk to me. But that’s alright. I’m just like dust to them. I shouldn’t be anything more for them.

I move on Kadmiel’s lap and he immobilises me with one piercing glance. He scares me to death. His massive frame is as threatening as a volcano at the bottom of the ocean. I shrink into myself as his arm crosses over my chest. He hands me a glass of water and grabs a bottle from the table, tipping it to his asymmetric lips. His scent invades my nostrils-forest, wind and menace. A hint of light sweat.

“So,” Kadmiel says into my ear, “are you going to fall in love with a human man?”

“I don’t know yet, sir,” I say politely.

Not every mermaid manages to find love during their first escapade. But, we enjoy learning about the human world so even if I don’t fall in love this time, I’ll return happy to my homeland underwater.

My sister fell in love with a human and chose to be one of them. She greeted me on the shore when I emerged from the sea. She gave me the nice clothes I have on. We chatted for a moment then she kissed my head and returned to her family. I started my first ever journey through the human world. I’m really enjoying my first visit on dry land. Well, I would enjoy it more if there were no scary angels around me.

Kadmiel draws me closer to him and my cheek rests against his black leather jacket. It’s cold to touch, but soft, and smells of him.

  “Drink,” he says.

So I drink. The water is too salty, but I empty the glass and put it on the table, coughing. Then I feel pressure in my lower tummy. Right. In human form, I need to pee like a normal girl.

“Sir,” I say, turning my face to Kadmiel.

“What is it, sweetheart?” He rests his forehead against mine, his breath hot against my skin.

I inhale him, his power and the absolute perfection of the fierce warrior inside him, and he inhales me. I’m petrified, yet fire seizes my insides.

My heart races, and I really need to pee.

“Sir,” I mumble. “Will you allow me to go to the toilet?”

  My words make him laugh.

“Sure,” he says, kissing my head as my sister would. Then he shoves me off his lap.

  Chapter 2

  Kadmiel

I watch her ass as it sways gracefully with her every step. Then my glance meets Micah’s.

“You okay?” Micah asks with concern.

  “She’s really young,” I say.

  “She knows what to do.”

“We should protect endangered species. There’s not many mermaids left. Two, three hundred?”

“Four hundred and fifty-eight.” Micah looks at me with pity.

I’m good at leading my boys and fighting; he’s good at studying ancient and modern knowledge.

My boys rumble something unintelligible and attempt to sing.

“Shut up,” I roar as the humans sitting in the pub raise their eyes to me.

“I’ve never seen an angel lusting for a mermaid,” Micah says with sarcasm, leaning towards me.

  “Fuck off,” I bark.

  He grins widely. “It’s—“

  “Fuck off,” I say louder.

Rive appears at the opposite end of the pub and I stifle my urge to run towards her, grab her hand, and drag her to a nice hotel room where I could explore her naked body. She raises her eyes towards the gallery supported by wooden pillars and watches it with amazement, twirling around the pub. A man walks into her. She sways and the man grips her arms to steady her.

They’re standing opposite each other, talking, and I read the man’s mind. He desires Rive. I can see his dirty fantasies about Rive in my mind. Rage fills my veins. I want to kill him.

Then I invade Rive’s mind. Joy and curiosity pulsate in her head. She is interested in him, enchanted by his voice and appearance and, fucking hell, she’s planning to be his wife.

  Over my dead body.

  Rive

His name is Ethan. He is my prince. Everything is perfect about him, his blue eyes, his unshaven cheeks, his kissable lips and his long golden hair tied on the back of his neck. His hair reminds me of the sun’s rays penetrating the sea.

“Where are you from?” Ethan asks as he rubs his hand against the front of his black t-shirt.

A bleached white skull printed on the fabric stares at me with empty eyes like it’s alive. A really strange fashion trend. I’d use pearls and shells to adorn my garments, but humans must prefer skulls.

  “From here,” I say.

It’s kind of true. I’m going to stay here for a while. I don’t know yet where I’m going to sleep tonight, but I like this town. It perches on the cliffs stretching along the beach.

My sister offered me accommodation, but I’m excited to sleep in the park I passed on my way here. I could listen to the murmur of the stone fountain there and look up at the night sky.

“Can I buy you a drink?” Ethan asks.

I really want him to buy me a drink. I want him to take me for a walk and kiss me. I’ve never kissed a man. My heart flutters and my hands sweat at the prospect of being kissed by Ethan.

  “So?” Ethan win
ks at me. “Beer, wine?”

Something urges me to look over my shoulder, and my glance meets the fury of Kadmiel’s eyes. He gestures for me to return to his table. I don’t understand his behaviour at all. He should be focused on seducing human women not teaching a mermaid how to behave on dry land. I kind of understand his protective attitude towards my species. We’re very rare these days. But, why does he want to keep me close? Maybe angels want to preserve our numbers unchanged at all costs? Demons kill us for fun. They’ve reduced our numbers by half over the last three centuries so maybe angels have become more vigilant about our safety. But, I know what to do. I should stay close to churches. That’s why I stepped into this pub. I’m safe in this building.

I turn my face to Ethan.

“I have to go,” I say. “But I will be here next week and we could talk for longer then.”

“I will be waiting for you,” Ethan says and kisses my cheek, making my heart pound in my chest.

A tingle runs down my spine and I feel pleasantly dizzy. Then I feel Kadmiel’s anger spreading in my mind, urging me to turn around and dart towards his table. I don’t understand it at all. Angels never allow others to know their emotions. Yet, I can sense his anger like somebody has slapped the back of my neck.

“I’m sorry, sir,” I say as I stand beside Kadmiel.

“It’s not safe to speak to people you don’t know,” Kadmiel says and grabs my wrist. His eyes narrow like he’s a predator and I’m his prey. “The party is over for you.” He slips from the bar stool and bows his head at his men who return their wide grins.

Then he drags me behind him towards the exit.

“I’m sorry for whatever I did to upset you, sir.”

“Be quiet. I need to focus.”

We pour out of the pub then Kadmiel turns into a narrow passage between two buildings. A street lamp casts its yellow light on us as we move behind two wheelie bins and the smell of rot whips my nostrils. Kadmiel tugs me to him, crushing me in his embrace, as his wings appear from his back. The black feathers rustle as he flaps them and I feel like I’m falling down into a chasm.
